ASDA, Britain’s second largest supermarket, yesterday (3 January 2001) announces a £450 million store development programme for 2001 – its biggest-ever year of investment in stores.

With 5000 new jobs and a 600,000 sq ft increase in retail space the activity during the year will include:




  • thirteen new stores including four rebuilds or re-sites;


  • new stores will open at Swindon (the first purpose built ASDA Wal-Mart supercentre), Bodmin, Dunstable, Dumbarton, Hull, Cambridge, Hyde in Greater Manchester, Leyton, Sefton in Liverpool;


  • re-sites or rebuilds will take place at Livingston (set to become Scotland’s largest store and their first ASDA Wal-Mart supercentre ), Cwmbran, Coventry and Peterlee;


  • six major extensions to existing stores including a 14,000 sq ft extension to Dundee and a 10,000 sq ft extension to Brighton;


  • a new distribution depot at Bedford creating 600 new jobs in an area recently hit by job losses in the car industry;


  • the renewal and refurbishment of 25 per cent of ASDA stores;

Looking ahead to 2002, ASDA will become the anchor store in the prestigious commonwealth games regeneration development, taking place at Eastlands in Manchester.


Paul Mason, ASDA’s chief operating officer says; “This record level of investment by Wal-Mart in the UK is in line with our strategy of long-term market-share growth and good news for British customers who know that when Wal-Mart comes to town, prices come down and stay down.”

  • Each new ASDA store creates approximately 400 jobs and a re-site/rebuild creates 100 new jobs – the jobs are a mixture of full time and part time permanent jobs – 75 per cent of colleagues who work at ASDA are part time;


  • Wal-Mart is the world’s largest retailer with 4000 stores world-wide and opened its first store in 1962;


  • Wal-Mart sales for year ending 31 January 2000 were $165 billion and employs more than one million associates world-wide;
