Walkers crisps is the UK’s most popular snack brand, according to research into the UK snack food market.
Over 60% UK consumers buy Walkers crisps on a regular basis, according to the findings of the Key Note’s snack foods market report. Walkers’ closest rival is Pringles, which are regularly purchased by 30% of those surveyed.
The study found that, with the exception of McCoy’s, the percentage penetration of savoury snacks tended to be higher among women than men. The least likely to eat any of the big crisp brands were the elderly.
Responding to criticism over rising levels of obesity, Key Note found that savoury snack manufacturers have developed low-salt and low-fat varieties to tackle declining sales.
Despite increasing public awareness of health issues, the number of consumers who do not purchase crisps fell from 20.3% in 2006 to 17.2% in 2007. However, only three individual brands – Walkers, Doritos and Kettle Chips – recorded higher percentage penetration than last year.

By GlobalDataThe market research group predicted that health issues would continue to have an adverse effect on the savoury snack market, but added that it expects growth in the savoury nut category. Overall retail value for the total market in the UK is forecast to fall by 3.4% between 2007 and 2011.
However, market decline is expected to slow as Walkers and other manufacturers continue to work towards producing healthier variants.
