The UK government has confirmed plans to scrap restrictions on the weight of unwrapped loaves of bread.
Unwrapped loaves that weigh more than 300g must currently be sold in quantities of 400g or multiples thereof.
However, the UK’s Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) has said fixed sizes stifle innovation and is out of kilter with regulations for packaged loaves, which saw restrictions lifted in April 2009.
Now BIS plans for a Statutory Instrument reducing restrictions to be laid before Parliament in the current session.
UK science minister David Willetts described current restrictions as “the sort of unnecessary red tape the government wants to remove”. He said: “We are freeing businesses so they can innovate and create new products to meet the demands of their customers.”
