Plans from UK dairy group Dairy Crest to close its production facility in Totnes has sparked criticism from the Transport and General Workers union, which has vowed to challenge the decision.

“Dairy Crest is probably the biggest single employer in Totnes. This closure will be a huge blow to the town,” Dave Springbett, a T&G regional industrial organiser, said. “We have nearly one hundred and fifty members there and we’ll be in touch with them pretty quickly. We cannot let this closure plan go unchallenged.”
According to the union over 200 jobs are at stake; however the company has put that figure at 164.
Dairy Crest has begun a 90-day consultation process with employees and unions which will be completed in mid-August.
“Although the consultation period is an open process and something can happen to change our plans during this period, in my experience this is rarely the case,” a spokesperson for Dairy Crest told just-food. “We expect to close the site in November.”
