Ukraine has moved to block imports of poultry products and raw materials from the UK, the Netherlands and Germany in a bid to prevent the spread of bird flu.

In a statement, the State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service said: ” The UK, the Netherlands and Germany recorded cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza with high mortality and the risk of human infection.”

Ukrainian agriculture authorities imposed the ban in an attempt to stop the entry of avian influenza into the country. To this end, officials are stopping poultry imports from the three European territories where bird flu cases have been confirmed.

Earlier this month, cases of the H5N8 strain of bird flu were detected at a farm in Germany. This week, Dutch authorities suspended the distribution of poultry and eggs after bird flu was found at a farm in the Netherlands and the UK government confirmed a case of bird flu had been found at a duck breeding farm.

“Immediate action has been taken to control the outbreak including introducing a 10km restriction zone and a complete cull of all 6,000 birds on the farm to prevent any potential spread of infection,” a statement from the UK’s Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs said.
