Kiev’s limits on maize, wheat and barley follow Russia’s move last month to ban exports after a summer when soaring temperatures and a lack of rain affected stocks.

Ukraine, which is the world’s largest exporter of barley, said the restrictions are set to remain in place until the end of the year.

There is some confusion about the exact size of the quotas. Initial reports said the Ukrainian government would allow the export of up to 2m tonnes of maize, 500,000 tonnes of barley and 500,000 tonnes of wheat.

However, according to Reuters, Ukraine Agriculture Minister Mykola Prysyazhyuk said the government had only adopted a draft plan and would finalise the limits next week.
