Metro Group has revealed plans to open some 20 cash and carry stores in Ukraine.

The company’s CEO, Dr Eckhard Cordes, said on Tuesday (7 June) that it sees “considerable potential for further development of our trading units in the coming years”.

He added that, between now and 2013, the retailer sees an opportunity for 20 stores in the country.

The company launched the smaller-format Metro Base banner last year with stores that offer approximately 2,000 SKUs – the main items in a typical neighbourhood store.

“We have already seen promising results from the new format. So we continue to develop Metro Base in the Ukraine as well as to open three classic stores this year,” said Metro Cash and Carry emerging markets head Frans Muller.
