Swiss industrial chocolate maker Barry Callebaut plans to expand its customer base in Mexico, having invested CHF45m (US$47.6m) to ramp up production capacity in the country.
The group has said it will increase capacity to 65,000 tonnes at its production site in Toluca, to the south-west of Mexico City. Together with Barry Callebaut’s facility in Monterrey, the company has a total capacity in the country of around 170,000 tonnes.
A spokesperson for the group told just-food approximately 70-80% of capacity is utilised to meet demand from Mexican customers.
“The site will manufacture chocolate products as well as compound chocolate – both in liquid and in moulded form. “The majority [of production] is destined for the local market,” the spokesperson revealed
“We acquired the factory in 2011 from Chocolates Turin, which we also serve for all of their liquid chocolate needs through Toluca. Another customer is Grupo Bimbo which we serve with both the Toluca and Monterrey factory. But, yes, we currently also have other customers serving from Toluca,” the spokesman said.
“We will further expand our Mexican customer base served from Toluca,” he revealed.
