Cereal giant Kellogg will look to cut salt across other products in its portfolio after announcing a 30% reduction in its Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes cereals yesterday (28 January).

The move, Kellogg said, will mean none of the company’s most popular cereals will now be classed as ‘red’ (high) for salt using the traffic light food labelling scheme developed by the Food Standards Agency.

However, Kellogg said more of its products could be set for further reductions in salt.

“We will look at salt across other products in our range,” a spokesperson for Kellogg told just-food.

The cuts to salt in Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes took “quite a number of months” and a “significant investment”, the spokesperson said.

“We have to redevelop the recipe and create test batches of food, then taste test them with consumers, then we have to change the recipe and start new production,” she explained.

The spokesperson said there was a “limit” to how low the salt content in product could go, adding that the firm had “no concerns” about the taste impact from the salt reduction.

“We have no concerns about the taste impact of these changes as we have taste-tested the new recipe extensively with consumers and they don’t know the difference. That’s the point of the way we do salt reduction – by increments so we take people’s palates with us. That approach has had support from the organisations concerned around taking salt levels down.”
