Robert Wiseman Dairies said most fresh milk in the UK contains two main types of beta-casein protein, A2 and A1. However, A2 milk comes from cows which naturally produce the A2 type of beta-casein protein rather than the A1, which can cause digestion problems.

A spokesperson for Wiseman said: “We hope that by introducing it in the UK, many people can enjoy the benefits of dairy without the discomfort.

“Around about 20% of people in Western countries believe they are intolerant of dairy and experience discomfort following the consumption of milk. By contrast, however, the NHS estimates that only about 5% of the population is medically diagnosed as lactose intolerant.”

A2 milk is already on sale in Australia and the spokesperson said it was one of the fastest grocery lines in the country, with 85% of people who trial the product go on to buy it again.
