Up to 2,500 jobs could be cut at Supervalu Inc’s Albertsons chain, the US retail giant has admitted.

Supervalu yesterday (6 June) announced plans to axe between 2,200 and 2,500 posts at Albertsons stores in California and Nevada.

The retailer said Albertsons had “not kept pace with the changing needs of its customers” and had seen shopper number and sales fall.

The cuts, it explained, would help the chain reduce costs and invest in “more customer-facing initiatives”.

Dan Sanders, president of Albertsons’ southern California division, said: “A decision of this nature is never easy, but it is the necessary step for us to take to help improve our business and accelerate our turnaround. Our goal is to more effectively serve the marketplace by scheduling associates more appropriately to serve customers at the times they shop. I am confident our team will embrace these changes and help us to compete more effectively in a rapidly changing marketplace.”

The job cuts, which will take in all 247 Albertsons stores in California and Nevada, will start in the week of 17 June and should be completed by 1 July.
