Manufacturer Lakeside Foods prompted the recall after informing Albertsons that the cans may contain harmful bacteria including Clostridium botulinum.

Albertson’s said the recall is being conducted in cooperation with both Lakeside and the US Food and Drug Administration. The Clostridium botulinum bacterium is the causative agent of botulism food poisoning.

The retailer said in a statement: “Out of an abundance of caution, Albertson’s and Lakeside Foods advise customers to refrain from consuming the product. Customers who have purchased the products that are subject to this recall may return the product to their local store for a full refund or exchange.”

The product in question bears the code UPC 41163412088. Customers were also given a dedicated toll-free number they could call with questions.

The Albertson’s case comes just after a major botulism contamination was discovered at a facility operated by Georgia-based food producer Castleberry’s, which precipitated a recall of chili sauces produced by the company. That recall was then extended to a significantly wider range of products.

On average, around 110 cases of botulism are reported in the US each year, of which around 25% are foodborne.
