Discount retailer Aldi has announced plans to expand into Texas with the opening of  27 stores in the north of the state over the next three months.

The company has prospered in the US during the economic downturn as consumers looked to reduce their grocery bills. The expansion into Texas means that the retailer will have operations in 31 states throughout the US.

“There’s no better time than now for great prices, good jobs and a lasting community investment,” said Scott Huska, Aldi Denton division vice president. “Whether shoppers need to stretch a budget or simply choose to have more money to spend on other things, north Texans can count on us for high quality select brands at prices no one else can touch.”

Aldi will have invested more than US$150m in capital expenditures in Texas, including the opening of a distribution centre.
