People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) claimed Mars bankrolls “deadly tests” on rats and mice and urged consumers to stop buying brand including M&Ms in protest.

“Mars is currently funding a deadly experiment on rats to determine the effects of chocolate ingredients on their blood vessels,” PETA said. “There are more reliable human studies and not one of the tests is required by law.”

Officials at Mars could not be reached for immediate comment but a statement on the company’s corporate website claimed it bans animal research involving “euthanasia, vivisection or the suffering of any animal”.
