The product line, designed specifically for rural parts of Asia, Africa and Latin America, is being developed with the help of Australia-based natural pesticide producer, TyraTech.
The two companies agreed last year to jointly develop compounds in functional foods and beverages to help prevent human parasitic infection in the developing world.
Sarah Delea, associate director of Kraft Foods, told just-food the development was in its initial stages and that the company was unable to go into detail about the product for competitive reasons.
“This is a long term project and we are still in the initial stages,” she said today (8 February). “We have been exploring the area of functional food for a number years. We see this current project similar to our efforts to enhancing nutritional profile of powdered beverages and cheese products in Latin America and Asia Pacific regions to help address nutrient deficiencies in those areas. For instance, in the Philippines, we fortify our cheese with iodine.”
