Campbell Soup Co. has struck a deal to buy New Jersey-based artisan bread-maker Ecce Panis for an undisclosed sum.

The acquisition, which is expected to be finalised later this spring, will see Ecce Panis become part of Campbell’s Pepperidge Farm bakery business.

Campbell president and CEO Doug Conant said the group could expand the availability of Ecce Panis products through its sales network.

“Artisan bread represents one of the fastest growing segments of the bakery category,” Conant said.

Ecce Panis was set up in 1988 and sells stone-baked breads through retail in-store bakeries. The business has a bakery in East Brunswick, New Jersey.
