The number of people who have died in the cantaloupe listeria outbreak in the US has reached 23, according to the latest government data.

The figures, measured until 0900 EDT on 11 October, also showed one pregnant woman had a miscarriage, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

The agency also reported that 116 people had been infected with the four outbreak strains of listeria monocytogenes.

Last month, US firm Jensen Farms recalled cantaloupes sold under the Rocky Farms brands. The CDC said the affected cantaloupes should no longer be on sale but added more illnesses could emerge. Up to two months can elapse between eating contaminated food and developing listeriosis.
