US food giant Cargill has spent US$8m expanding packaging at its Fresno beef site and improving food-safety procedures at the facility.

The company said today (8 December) that it had spent $3.8m “renovating and expanding” some ground-beef packaging lines at the site in the Californian city.

Cargill said it had installed new equipment to ensure the packaging lines “operate more effectively and efficiently to meet customer needs”.

The company has also spent $4.2m on installing a carcass wash that “closely resembles a carwash for cattle”, it said.

The system scrubs animal hides with spinning bristles and a bromine solution that kills bacteria at the start of the harvesting process.
