The site in Columbus produces frozen beef patties for the foodservice channel and enables Cargill to replace capacity lost after a plant in Arkansas was destroyed by fire in March.

A spokesperson for Cargill said the Columbus site employs 3-400 people and that the company is looking to take on more workers.

The deal should be finalised on 2 January although both sides have refused to disclose financial details surrounding the agreement.

The acquisition gives Cargill Meat Solutions, a division of Cargill, 23 plants in US.
