Fresh Express, the packaged salads subsidiary of produce group Chiquita Brands International, has acquired privately-owned Pennsylvania salads specialist Verdelli Farms.
The financial details of the deal were not disclosed. The company has an annual turnover in the region of US$80m.
Verdelli, which processes and distributes fresh salads, vegetables and fruit snacks, markets its products under the Harvest Select and Verdelli Farms brands in ten states, including Massachusetts and Virginia.
“The acquisition accelerates our expansion into the Northeast, where there is strong demand from the largest US. concentration of value-added salads consumers but where the Fresh Express brand has been underrepresented,” said Fernando Aguirre, Chiquita’s chairman and CEO.
