The relocation to a city over 460 miles south-east from Cincinnati will affect over 300 employees based at Chiquita’s current HQ.

The company said it would offer “the great majority” of its head office staff the opportunity to move to Charlotte. However, Chiquita said the switch from Ohio to North Carolina was driven by its effort to make its operations more efficient.

“Charlotte provided the most compelling economic opportunity to lower our long-term operating costs and the region is an attractive community for our employees. Importantly, the Charlotte airport provides improved access to international markets, customers and Chiquita operations around the world,” Chiquita chairman and CEO Fernando Aguirre said.

The company also plans to transfer over 100 more positions spread across the US to Charlotte to speed up decision making. The move to the city is expected to be complete by the end of 2012 and will cost the group up to $35m over the next two years.
