US food giant ConAgra Foods is to buy frozen pie maker American Pie, which makes products under the Marie Callender’s and Claim Jumper brands.
The acquisition, struck for an undisclosed sum, will bolster the number of Marie Callender’s lines in the ConAgra stable.
ConAgra makes Marie Callender’s products, including pot pies and frozen dinners, under a licence agreement with Marie Callender’s Pie Shops.
The company said the acquisition gives it the chance to expand its presence in frozen pies, which it said is the largest category within frozen retail desserts.
“Acquiring the Marie Callender’s retail dessert pie business will allow us to establish a strong presence in frozen dessert by leveraging fully the power of the Marie Callender’s brand across the frozen case,” said ConAgra CEO Gary Rodkin.
American Pie employs almost 125 staff at a production facility in California and an office in New York state. ConAgra said it expected to retain all employees.
