US food giant ConAgra Foods is to put a potato processing plant on “indefinite shutdown” from May, a move that could affect 250 jobs.

The facility, part of ConAgra’s Lamb Weston business and located in Prosser in Washington state, will stop production on 30 May.

“The plant’s shutdown comes as a result of current economic conditions that have softened market demand for frozen potato products – something the entire industry is experiencing,” a ConAgra spokesman told just-food.

“The Prosser plant is also the highest cost plant to operate for Lamb Weston and that also factored into the decision.”

Last week, when ConAgra issued its latest quarterly numbers, the company said Lamb Weston’s sales and profit growth “continued to be negatively impacted by difficult foodservice industry conditions”.
