Upon approval, the “green” Minnesota store has been designed to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification and will be located in the Phalen neighbourhood of St Paul, the state capital.

The 62,900sq ft Cub Foods store has also been designed to give customers a “unique shopping environment”, the company on Friday (31 October), with a solar powered GPS system, a landscape irrigation system that uses 50% less water than typical systems, 44 skylights that will illuminate 75% of space, and an illuminated commercial parking lot using LED lights.

“Environmental stewardship, living-wage jobs and urban revitalisation are not mutually exclusive goals,” said St Paul mayor Chris Coleman. “This store shows that smart investments can be good for neighbourhoods, good for the environment and good for a company’s bottom line.”

The store will also offer a “broader selection” of fresh seafood, an expanded global department with food from around the world, a pharmacy with a drive-thru window and a full-service TCF Bank.

“The innovations Cub Foods brings to the St Paul Phalen community with its new LEED store are exceptional,” said Jamie Pfuhl, president of the Minnesota Grocers Association. “The commitment Cub is making to the long-term well-being of the environment, their customers and employees truly exemplifies what our hometown grocers are all about.”

Cub Foods, which was purchased in 1980 by Supervalu, currently operates 57 stores in the “Twin Cities” of Minnesota and St Paul.
