Dole Food Co. has acquired US healthy snack firm Mrs May’s Natural for an undisclosed sum.

The acquisition, the US produce giant said on Friday (2 March), will become part of the Dole Packaged Foods division. The company said it hopes the purchase will help it accelerate the development of its all-natural offerings in the health and nutrition space.

All Mrs May’s products will continue to be packaged under the Mrs May’s label and carried in their existing retailers. Dole said it believes the retention of the independent brand label provides an opportunity to grow the brand.

However, the firm said it will be looking at co-branding opportunities following completion of the deal, in addition to new product development.

“Mrs May’s Naturals is a recognised name with proven results at major retailers,” said Dole Food Co’s president and CEO David DeLorenzo. “Their all-natural snacks, which include vegan, gluten-free, and kosher options, fit perfectly with the Dole ‘Nutrition Plus’ product line which is designed to improve health and wellness through diet.

Founded in 2002, Mrs May’s Naturals is a family-run business that generated revenues of around US$16m in 2011. Its product offerings include fruit and nut based clusters, bars and freeze-dried fruit.
