The company said that the move is in line with its strategy to expand in the western US, which has seen it open stores in states outside its Tennessee base, including Arizona and Colorado.

“Our California stores will mark a significant milestone for Dollar General, giving us a coast-to-coast presence for the first time,” said chairman and CEO Rick Dreiling yesterday (26 May).
The California announcement comes on the heels of the company’s planned expansions into three new states in 2011 – Connecticut, Nevada and New Hampshire. California would be Dollar General’s 39th state.
Dollar General plans to serve California shoppers in suburban, rural and metropolitan markets.
