A factory fire, severe cold weather and interruption to output due to relocation has weighed on quarterly sales at Tasty Baking Co., deepening the US company’s losses.
Tasty Baking today (6 May) booked a first-quarter net loss of US$3.9m for the three months to 27 March.

Net sales fell 6.6% to $43.1m as an oven fire at Tasty Baking’s Hunting Park site and the cold weather hit sales.
Tasty Baking also cited “transition related production and distribution issues” at its new facility in the Philadelphia Navy Yard.
“The first quarter of 2010 was a challenging period for us,” said president and CEO Charles Pizzi. “We had a confluence of events that severely limited our ability to fulfill existing orders and meet demand in the market.”
Pizzi said five of the seven lines at the Philadelphia Navy Yard were now open and added that the group would look to sell the Hunting Park facility.
