The fire broke out on Sunday afternoon while welding work was being carried out and, according to local reports, was still smouldering Monday morning.

While no injuries were reported, according to Reuters newswire parts of the city were evacuated due to concerns that leaking ammonia gas posed a health risk.

The company has been unable to confirm whether it will rebuild in Booneville and is still assessing the extent of the damage.

Cargill was unavailable for further comment as just-food went to press.
