US baker Flowers Foods is to re-open a plant formerly owned by rival Hostess Brands, which was wound down earlier this year.

Flowers said the facility in Henderson, Nevada, will start production later this year. The site was closed in November when Hostess Brands started liquidation proceedings. Flowers snapped up the facility – and other Hostess assets – in July.

“As we’ve said since acquiring the Hostess assets this past summer, our plan is to open bakeries as we need additional production capacity to meet market demand,” Flowers president and CEO Allen Shiver said. “Henderson is strategically located to help us continue to build market presence in this region.”

The bakery will employ 60 staff and produce Flowers’ Nature’s Own brand for customers in southern Nevada and parts of California.

Hostess Brands has returned to the market under new owners at Hostess Brands LLC. The Hostess snack cake business, including the Twinkies, HoHos and Ding Dongs brands, was sold to private-equity investors Metropoulos & Co. and Apollo Global Management in June. Brands have returned to US shelves and the new owners have said they plan to invest in the bakeries that manufacture the products. Plans are underway to open another bakery, the new company’s fifth, next year.
