US frozen-food Bellisio Foods has struck a deal to buy Overhill Farms to boost its stable of branded and own-label items.

Bellisio said today (15 May) the acquisition, if approved, would add Overhill’s licence to manufacture products under the Boston Market brand to its portfolio. The two companies already co-manufacture and distribute Boston Market products.

The company, which says it is the third-largest supplier of frozen entrees in the US, said the deal would also increase its “blue-chip” private-label and foodservice customer base. Overhill Farms supplies retailers including Safeway Inc and Target Corp. and manufacturers like Pinnacle Foods.

Bellisio CEO Joel Conner said: “The addition of Overhill Farms’ manufacturing capabilities and its customer and brand portfolios align perfectly with Bellisio’s growth strategies to expand our customer base, strengthen our brand portfolio, invest in high-growth platforms, and leverage our manufacturing disciplines to generate strong returns.”

The transaction, which is subject to regulatory approval, is expected to be finalised later this summer.
