The food companies must submit data about their traditional and online media targeting of children, including allotted budgets, plus product placement and word-of-mouth marketing activities.

The FTC has specifically requested information on the marketing of products including breakfast cereals, snack foods and confectionery.

The agency, charged with protecting US consumers, also wants information on the marketing of dairy products, baked goods, prepared foods and meals, frozen and chilled desserts and fast food restaurant items.

Food products bearing information about nutritional icons such as “better for you” and how these products are marketed to children and adolescents will fall under the FTC microscope.
