President Obama is looking to increase the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) budget for fiscal 2013 by 17%, resulting in an increase in industry fees.

According to a budget request released by the administration yesterday (13 February), the FDA is asking for a budget of US$4.5bn.

Industry fees would fund 98% of this increase which would be used to monitor food safety and carry out food and drug inspections in China.

“These are austere budget times, and the FDA budget request reflects this reality,” insisted FDA commissioner of food and drugs Margaret Hamburg. “Our budget increases are targeted to strategic areas that will help speed the availability of new medical products, address the challenges of increased globalisation and allow FDA to fulfill its public health duties more efficiently.

“With FDA-regulated products accounting for about a quarter of each dollar that Americans spend, these budget priorities will benefit patients and consumers and strengthen our economy.”

The request covers the period from 1 October through to 30 September 2013.
