The US Food Safety and Inspection Service has issued a final ruling on the changes to the description of raw meat and poultry products. 

On 31 December, the authority ordered an amendment to the regulations that require the use of a “descriptive designation” as part of the product name on labels of raw meat and poultry products that contain added solutions and that do not meet a standard of identity.

The designation will now need to include the percentage of the added solution and the individual ingredients or multi-ingredient components in the solution. In addition, the agency proposed the print for all of the words in the name, including the percentage and ingredients in the solution, appear in a single font size, colour, and style of print and appear on a single-colour contrasting background.

Changes are effective from 1 January 2016. The agency had proposed the changes in July 2011 in response to two petitions that requested it to prevent consumers from being misled by the marketing of added solution poultry products.

FSIS estimates the one-time cost to the industry is about US$52m to $84m, with an average cost per establishment of US$8,496-$13,765.
