US cereal giant Kellogg is lining up US$18m of investment at its production site in Grand Rapids in the state of Michigan.

Kellogg is considering switching the production of its Special K Crisp snack bar from an unnamed manufacturing partner in Illinois to the Grand Rapids site, the company confirmed to just-food last night (1 December).

A spokesperson said Kellogg had asked for a “tax abatement” from local authorities to “offset costs”.

Should Kellogg secure the abatement, the company will push ahead with installing a new line at the Grand Rapids site, a move that could create around 45 jobs.

“We typically begin production of new products in co-manufacturing facilities and then move production to a Kellogg facility once we determine their long-term viability,” the spokesperson said. “The Grand Rapids facility produces primarily baked goods and as a result is better equipped to operate the new line.”
