A US court has granted class action status to a lawsuit brought forward by Kraft workers seeking pay for time spent donning safety equipment, such as protective boots, hard hats or earmuffs.

US District Judge Barbara Crabb has said current and former employees at Kraft’s Oscar Mayer processing plant in Masison who were paid at an hourly rate since May 2004 are entitled to join the claim against the company.


The company has argued that time spent taking off and putting on safety equipment does not qualify for pay and is fighting the lawsuit.


Kraft was not available for comment as just-food went to press.
