Mars Inc is to cut the amount of salt in its Uncle Ben’s flavoured rice products in the US as part of the food group’s commitment to a New York City-led programme to reduce sodium in foods.

The company’s Mars Food US arm yesterday (26 April) announced plans to cut the salt in the Uncle Ben’s products by 25% in five years.

The pledge came as Mars said it was a signatory to the National Salt Reduction Initiative, a programme first announced in January and drawn up to cut the level of salt in packaged and restaurant foods by a quarter over five years.

“We believe that our efforts to reduce sodium in Uncle Ben’s brand flavoured rice can have a significant impact, especially since it is the number-one rice brand in America,” said Mike Wilson, vice president, research and development, at Mars Food US.
