Mars Inc has outlined plans to build a chocolate manufacturing facility in the US, a plant the confectioner claimed would be its first such site in the country for 35 years.
The plant, to be based in Kansas’ state capital of Topeka, will help Mars meet “growing demand” for its confectionery products, including M&M’s and Snickers, the company said today (29 June).

Mars said it would spend US$250m on “phase one” of the project, which is expected to be completed in 2013 when the site will start to produce M&M’s and Snickers products.
The company said it expects to create 200 full-time staff to work on the lines installed in the initial phase. Mars indicated that the capacity of the plant would be extended over time, with more product lines added.
“The site will be a reflection of our commitment to manufacture our products in the markets where we sell them,” said Mike Wittman, vice president of supply at the company’s Mars Chocolate North America unit.
