US infant nutrition maker Mead Johnson has announced it will build a $325m manufacturing plant in Singapore.

The company says it is making the investment in anticipation of a spike in demand in Asia.

The project is the biggest capital expenditure in the company’s history and the plant is expected to be fully operational in mid-2014, it said.

“The new facility is needed to meet future demand for Mead Johnson products and will enable us to better serve our customers across Asia. This significant investment includes the company’s first spray dryer in Asia, which will strengthen our regional supply chain and help improve our overall operating efficiency,” said Jeffrey Jobe, senior vice president, global supply chain.

“Demand for our products across Asia has been increasing at a double-digit rate for the past decade and future prospects remain strong.”

The new facility will create jobs in Singapore, as well as require transfers of a number of management and technical positions, the company said.
