US infant nutrition maker Mead Johnson has welcomed test results that show its infant formulas are not related to four cases of infection.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) launched an investigation after four infants in Florida, Illinois, Missouri, and Oklahoma were found to have cronobacter infections.

The agencies tested various brands, including Mead Johnson’s Enfamil, and inspected manufacturing facilities but results show the four cases are unrelated and a recall is not necessary.

A CDC statement said: “There is currently no evidence to conclude that the infant formula or nursery water was contaminated during manufacturing or shipping.”

Tim Brown, senior vice president and general manager for Mead Johnson’s North American operations, said the all-clear shows the stringency of its quality control.

He said: “We’re pleased with the FDA and CDC testing, which should reassure consumers, healthcare professionals and retailers everywhere about the safety and quality of our products. These tests also reinforce the rigour of our quality processes throughout our operations.”
