US regional retailer Meijer has opened a new store concept in Chicago called Meijer Marketplace.

The grocery retailer said yesterday (26 July) that the store will cover 96,000 square feet – half the size of its supercenters. It said the stores will offer a “mini” supercentre concept that provides local customers with a “tailored grocery offering along with a broad variety of general merchandise items”.

The Melrose Park store will be focused on providing a “total grocery shopping experience” with meats and produce, as well as a wide variety of deli, bakery and pantry items. The store will also offer Hispanic and Italian foods, which Meijer said will provide a “new shopping option for the ethnically-diverse community nearby”.

The store will also offer a pharmacy and non-food offer that will include electronics, seasonal items, toys, sporting goods and a pet department.

“Meijer Marketplace is a dramatic step for us as we work toward bringing everything that’s great about Meijer to a more diverse group of customers,” said co-chairman and CEO Hank Meijer. “The Chicago market continues to be a very important growth area for us, and our new Meijer Marketplace concept will bring yet another unique offering to our Chicago-area customers.”
