PepsiCo said today (3 October) that it has made “significant” progress toward its long-term environmental sustainability goals.

The goals, which include reducing water consumption by 20%, electricity consumption by 20% and fuel consumption by 25% per unit of production by 2015, are part of PepsiCo’s plant to “leave a positive imprint on society”, the company said.
“All of the credit for the progress we’ve made so far goes to the many talented people within PepsiCo who have found innovative ways to reduce our environmental footprint,” said Indra Nooyi, PepsiCo’s chairman and CEO. “We still have much work to do, but these are important, positive steps in our long journey to constantly improve our stewardship of the environment.”
The company, however, gave no specific figures on how much it had so far reduced its water, electricity and fuel usage.
Nevertheless, PepsiCo said that, in order to meet its targets, it has launched a number of activities, which include air-rinse technology to clean newly-manufactured bottles with air instead of water, and storing orange juice at the Tropicana facility at a ‘cool’ temperature rather than ‘ultra-low’.
