US retailer Publix has recalled four own-label seasoning mixes on concerns they could be contaminated with salmonella.

The supermarket group said yesterday (8 March) that it was recalling Publix Mushroom Gravy Mix, Publix Meatloaf Seasoning, Publix Beef Flavored Stew Mix and Publix Au Jus Gravy Mix.

The products were all produced using HVP (hydrolyzed vegetable protein) supplied by Basic Food Flavors of Nevada.

Basic Food Flavors recalled the ingredient last week after an unnamed customer reported salmonella contamination to the Food and Drug Administration. Food safety inspectors then detected the presence of salmonella at the company’s manufacturing facility.

“As part of our commitment to food safety, potentially impacted product has been removed from all store shelves,” said Maria Brous, Publix media and community relations director.

No illnesses have been reported to date.
