PepsiCo’s Quaker Foods North America is the latest firm to announce a recall due to possible salmonella contamination from HVP, or hydrolysed vegetable protein.
The recall has hit a number of US food makers and retailers recently, including Publix, Safeway Inc, Procter & Gamble and McCormick.

PepsiCo’s Quaker Snack Mix Baked Cheddar has been produced using HVP supplied by Basic Food Flavors of Nevada.
Basic Food Flavors recalled the ingredient last week after an unnamed customer reported salmonella contamination to the Food and Drug Administration. Food safety inspectors then detected the presence of salmonella at the company’s manufacturing facility.
Although Quaker said every seasoning lot tested negative for salmonella, and there have been no reports of illnesses related to the product, the firm said it was voluntarily recalling the product “out of an abundance of caution”.
The affected product is packaged in 8oz and 1.75oz packs with a sell-by date of 15 June 2010.
