US supermarket operator Safeway Inc has appointed Gary Rogers to its board of directors.

Rogers served as CEO of Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream from 1977 until its acquisition by Swiss food giant Nestle in 2007. Rogers was also the chairman of Levi Strauss – where he served on the board from 1998 to 2008 – and of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco – where he sat on the board from 2005 until 2010.

He is also on the advisory boards of Shorenstein Properties and Stanislaus Food Products as well as a number of public service boards. Rogers previously served on the boards of Foster Farms, The Wine Group, GardenAmerica, Il Fornaio and Marathon Meat.

“Gary’s vast experience as a supplier to the grocery industry, his business acumen and experience as a director will be great assets to the board,” said Safeway chairman, president and CEO Steve Burd.

The appointment increases the number of directors on the Safeway board to ten.
