Little Leaf Farms, a US-based producer of packaged salad items, has announced major expansion plans.

The Massachusetts-headquartered firm, which mainly packages lettuce and leafy greens supplied to major supermarket chains in New England, revealed it will start construction on a 20-acre greenhouse in eastern Pennsylvania followed by another 20-acre greenhouse in North Carolina.

The North Carolina project, in Yancey County, is expected to create 100 jobs. It will be the company’s first operation in the state.

Little Leaf also plans to double the size of its Massachusetts base in 2020 to help it expand further into areas including New York and New Jersey.

The plan to construct a new greenhouse at Devens, Massachusetts, will see it expanding from five acres to ten acres there which will increase the production of lettuce to two million boxes.

Little Leaf Farms CEO Paul Sellew said: “Customers have really responded to our lettuces, saying we have the best, most flavourful product, and we are now the number one packaged lettuce in New England.”
