Other new product developments include the launch of Chiquita Fresh & Ready Bananas in the US, which are packaged in a patented FreshPak plastic sealed tray that lets in just the right amount of air to slow the ripening process naturally, keeping bananas fresh for up to four days longer. Meanwhile, Grapple Sweet Apples combine the distinctive flavour of Concord grapes with the crispness of a fresh, juicy Washington State apple.

Another innovation in the produce sector saw the launch in the US of Fizzy Fruit Sparkling Fresh Grapes, which are refrigerated grapes that are carbonated. The grapes retain the same vitamins and fibre content as found in regular fresh-cut fruit.

In the UK, leading food retailer Tesco launched Square-Shaped Watermelons, which are grown in boxes to make them square, making them easier for the retailer to store and transport, and also ensuring that they don’t roll around in the customer’s trolley.

Lastly, for hunters in the US, the Season Shot Shot Gun Shell Filled with Spices provides a unique labour-saving innovation in food flavouring. Described by its makers as “Ammo with Flavour”, Season Shot consists of tightly packed seasoning bound by a fully biodegradable food product. When used to shoot a bird, the seasoning pellets melt into the meat, spreading the flavour to the entire bird.
