US food group Sara Lee will close its Chicago kosher hot dog and meat processing facility in a move that will see it exit the kosher meat business.
Around 185 jobs will be lost, the company said in a statement yesterday (19 November).
Sara Lee will discontinue the processing and distribution of products made under all of its kosher meat brands, including Best’s Kosher, Sinai Kosher, Shofar and Wilno.
“This decision was made after careful consideration of our strategic, long-term plan, which focuses on categories where we have a strategic competitive advantage,” said CJ Fraleigh, Sara Lee’s chief operating officer, North America.
The company said that the factory would close on or before the end of January next year.
