It is the second time Spengler has retired from the US retail group. He first left in 2005, but was lured back a year later to help run Save Mart’s acquisition of 132 Northern California stores, which were bought from Albertsons LLC.
The company said it has no plans to hire a replacement. Instead, a three-member executive team will take over Spengler’s role and report to CEO Bob Piccinini.
In a statement, Piccinini said Spengler had agreed to come back to Save Mart “with the stipulation that it would be a short-term deal.”
