US snacks firm Snyder’s-Lance is to build a 60,000sq ft research and development centre in Pennsylvania.

The facility, which will be in Hanover, will be used to “enhance” new and existing products for the company’s full line of snack foods, Snyder’s-Lance said.

“This new centre will allow us to build on our already great reputation for quality and innovation across our entire product portfolio, and I look forward to the new and innovative product platforms we’ll be able to develop there,” said Snyder’s-Lance senior VP of R&D and quality Jim Butt.

The three-storey research site, which is set to be ready in the last three months of the year, has been designed to be environmentally-friendly, the firm said. It will use ‘green’ technologies and design, including drawing 100% of its electricity from a nearby 26-acre solar farm.

The company said there are no immediate plans to add new employees to the research centre, though it said final details of specific operations and staffing are still being finalised.
