Eidson has also been appointed a board director. The board now has nine members, seven of whom are independent.

As president and COO, Eidson will lead the company’s overall strategy implementation and execution, and direct all operating aspects of both the retail and distribution business segments, the company said. He will continue to report to chairman and CEO Craig Sturken, to whom he had already been reporting in his role as executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Spartan has also revised its organisational structure. Derek Jones, executive vice president, supply chain will now report to Eidson, while Tom Berg, vice president, business development will report directly to Jones. Both men had previously reported directly to Sturken.

Ted Adornato, executive vice president, retail operations, Alan Hartline, senior vice president, merchandising, Ken Thewes, vice president, marketing, and Tom Montgomery, manager, retail services will all continue to report Eidson.

“Our steady business expansion and continuing organisational growth during the past four years necessitated the change in our organisational structure and expansion of our board,” Sturken said. “The position of president and new reporting structure will allow us to better accommodate our continued growth. Moreover, the changes will allow me to focus more effort on the most important long-term strategic growth aspects of our business plan and less on the daily operational execution.”

Eidson joined Spartan Stores in March 2003 as executive vice president of marketing and merchandising, and was promoted in February to the newly created position of executive vice president and chief operating officer. Prior to joining Spartan, he was divisional president and CEO of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company’s Midwest region, and assistant general manager of Nash Finch’s Michigan operations.
